It's been quite a while since i've done any updates to internetempowered.com as there has been no real interest. I will be posting updates soon.

As of May 1, 2008, legislation was passed in Canada within the "Tackling Violent Crime Act" to increase the legal age of consentual sex to 16 years of age. Read more...
Freedom to roam the information superhighway...

Oh great, another internet safety site... Not so says I.

I've spent hours surfing the web seeing what's out there related to information on internet safety. There isn't much to be honest and most of the sites i'm visiting is regurgitation the same old information. Don't do this, don't do that but there's no reasoning behind it. They don't seem to explain "if you do this, then this can happen". That's not good enough anymore. Hard hitting, in your face information is what's needed this day in age, the reasoning behind insecurity and information loss.

There are sites popping up everywhere, even on facebook - people are claiming to be experts on internet safety and preaching what they are finding out there.  Schools are publishing this information, police are following it but why aren't the hard questions being answered?

Some of this site is going to seem harsh to parents and guardians but it's to the point where it's necessary now. This is the technological age where anyone, be they popes or pedophiles, can hide and be anything or anyone they want. That supposed 14 year old your son or daughter is talking to could be anyone.

Remember, as a parent/guardian, you are responsible for what your child does, and what the end result of their actions are. You may not be able to stop them, but they must be aware of what can happen. You as a parent or guardian must be able to teach them the good side of the internet and the ugly. If you can't do it, who will?

I personally hear concerns and real stories from parents and people all the time... Commonly, they do not know where their child goes nor does while on the internet. So many parents tell me that they won't let their kids go outside alone or even with friends unless there's an adult present, but yet many kids can get on the internet, go anywhere, and do pretty much anything without any kind of supervision. The proof is online in profile sites, personal blogs, anywhere you look.

Think about this if you will... You as a parent wouldn't toss your car keys to your 13 year old child and tell them to have a drive around town. No, there are age restrictions on licensing for one and number 2, you would teach your child right from wrong on driving a car. Teach them to drive safely and hope they make the right decisions right?

But many parents are giving their kids the keys to the internet, without the knowledge of the rights, wrongs and the dangers. That's what internetempowered.com is all about. Many people don't have the knowledge to pass along to their kids and others. If you as a parent don't know the dangers, how do you protect your children???

I know finding information can be difficult and frustrating, been there and done that. There are so many websites out there offering the "generic" information that is not complete. It's frustrating for me to get the information I need without having to surf through reams of pages of useless info. I can only imagine how hard it is for the average parent.

I sincerely hope the information contained in this site and forum will allow you to educate yourself and your child about the dangers of the internet. There are tools provided that will allow you to track your childs movements, track their email and to keep an overall eye on your childs internet usage.

There are no real rules here, just respect one another and their opinions. We are all adults.
