"Know what your kids are doing online"
When it comes to kids habits online, the site tends to lean to nexopia.com as an example. First of all, wether we agree with their policies or not, it exists. If nexopia didn't exist, another site would come along to fill the void.
Nexopia and like sites provide the playground for your kids to play, to express themselves and to supposedly follow the rules. While it's convenient to blame Nexopia and like sites, the end burden is really on you, the parent to know what your child is doing online. Nexopia is not a babysitter for your child, they really aren't responsible if your child provides the means to endanger themselves. With over 1.3 million registered users, it is quite difficult to monitor everything. This is a sad fact.
The legal age of sexual consent in Canada is now 16, you must be aware of that. Wether you like it or not, it is LEGAL for a grown adult of any age to approach your 16 year old child and solicit sex from them. It's very common over the internet but you can do something about it. Know what your child is doing online, take an interest in their activities. If you don't, someone else will.
It is your responsibility and we cannot stress that enough.
Some important questions to ask yourself:
Am I ready to know what my child is doing online? If so, how do I handle the situations that arise? How do I deal with my child?s need for privacy? If I choose to spy on my child or track their movements, how is it going to reflect any trust issues?
What your child does online does not necessarily reflect how they really are. Kids feel they need to keep up appearances and "hang with the Jones", so to speak. Kids feel anonymous online, but realistically, how well hidden are they.
