"I thought it was just my friends looking at it"
Young teens are curious and precocious about talking online about sex, yet not understanding the full scope, and not looking at the repercussions of being tracked online or worse.
Kids, some that look as young as 10, are posting their pictures and personal information onto sites such as nexopia.com, myspace.com, and piczo.com to name a few. Many of the younger teen girls are posting pictures, profiles and taglines that would definitely attract the attention of online perverts.
"Kids are just putting it all out there!!"
It never ceases to amaze me how kids (and parents too) are just putting it all out there on sites like nexopia and myspace? The alluring pictures, the perfect camera angles showing off the overall bodies, boobs and butts. The taglines and the mouths on some of these young kids is unbelievable. That's not the worst of it, it's the personal information many of these kids are adding to their profiles.
Sites like nexopia are a playground, or a dreamland, for predators and i'd be very willing to bet that the vast majority of these young girls have been approached by someone they don't want to be exposed to. It's impossible for it not to happen. Just look at some of the forums and you'll find out what goes on, what the attitudes of some of these men are. They make their ideals public and it?s legal, they say that these young girls are beautiful and how they'd like to have a shot at them.
The worst of it all? Some parents are well aware of what their kids are doing on sites like nexopia, but they either choose to ignore it, feel their hands are tied or don?t realize the extreme level of what their kids are doing. What happens to these kids at this point? Who's there to protect them? Who's to blame at that point if anything happens to that child?
Many of the young teens, aside from posting pictures, are pretty safe about not posting too much information. However, the added dangers come into play from their friends list. Your child may be smart about their profiles, but when they are linked to their "friends" that post too much information, they are jeopardized. Some kids are posting lists of friends names, first and last, and that child may be posting the correct locale and other information that could lead to him/her being tracked.
I, as well as many others, have read many profiles, comments and blogs on nexopia. Most of the profiles i've been through are from kids living in the Edmonton and St. Albert area, and it scares me to know how easy it is to find phone numbers and addresses of some of these kids. Some kids think they are smart by listing themselves as living in Russia or other foreign country but when their all the friends in their list are claiming to live in St. Albert, it's pretty obvious right?
Kids are posting their last names, the one with unusual spellings are easy to find. Get on canada411.com and look up your last name. How would you feel if one of your kids had a picture profile on nex posting your last name when you're the only one in the phone book?
So aside from the obvious, what are some of the other dangers of profile sites?
Many kids are posting the schools they attend, their favorite hangouts that they "walk" to, pictures from their bedroom webcam with a school or city poster in the background, as well as their full names. You may not think this information isn't very traceable, but think again. If a predator knows that this child isn't old enough to drive, then they are forced to walk right? If they know the location of their hangouts, then it's just a matter of thinking of walking distance. They can pull up yahoo maps and do a quick search on street addresses of the hangouts and schools. The next step, knowing the child's last name, is to get on
www.canada411.com and do a search for the city with the known last name.
Other young teens are posting pictures of themselves involved in activities that aren't legal at their age. A random search will be an eye-opener for most parents. Underage members post pictures of themselves with friends drinking beer. Others write about their experiences with drugs. Frank and sexually explicit comments appear on friends' profile pages.
Thank you.
