Internet Empowered - Internet SafetyWho's To Blame If Your Child Gets Hurt?
"Be aware of what your child is doing online."

Many parents have approached me blaming nexopia and like sites for the access they are providing to their children. But is it really their fault? Lets try to figure this out shall we?

If someone were to take their Ford Explorer out to a bar, have a few drinks and have an accident while driving home, is it Ford?s fault? Can you sue Ford for causing the accident? After all, Ford provided the medium for the drunk to drive? Maybe it"s the bar's fault for allowing that person to have a few in the first place? No, it's the drivers fault. This would be a person that knows the dangers of drinking and driving, knows it"s the wrong thing to do, but does it anyway. This is a harsh example but a good one.

Go to nexopia.com: Right on the home page it states the "best practices".

"Be aware of what your child is doing online."

Many sites, not just nex, require users to be 18 and older to freely register. BUT, anybody between the ages of 14 to 17 can register but must have parental permission. Did you give your child permission to register? How many kids registered on nexopia without parental permission? I ask again, who"s to blame for it? Your child probably lied to nexopia so they can register, and nexopia has no real way to police it. They have to accept that parental permission was given. What"s worse, so many parents do not know this site exists but yet, so many kids with access to internet in western Canada have a Nex account. So how is this possible? That's what we're trying to figure out. Is it really Nexopia's fault that your child has an account on their site? will it be their fault if your child gets approached by an online pervert or worse. How can nexopia, or sites like theirs, be blamed if they are following the rules. How can a parent claim that nexopia has hurt their child when the majority of parents don't even know their site exists?

It's rather simple actually. Your child's actions on the internet are your responsibility, their safety is your responsibility. When it comes to kids and teens, do you really think they understand or care if they are putting themselves at risk? No, it's fun to them, it's a great medium for them to interact with others on the internet. I've talked to many teens on the subject of safety, explained what could happen, and they are now more aware of the dangers and how to deal with them. Will it stop them from being safe? Probably not but they are now educated.

Common sense dictates that if your child has a nex profile, is listing their full name, sexy pictures, school names, family etc, then the parent doesn't know what the child is up to. On the other hand, there are parents that are aware of their child's profile on nex but don't understand that posting personal information is a dangerous thing to do. Ask yourself, where do you fit in?

Use common sense, learn how to lock the doors. Learn what your kids are doing on the internet. If you don't know how to do it, how can you teach your child to be safe?

Thank you.
