"But Mom, it'll make it safer for me, i'll know who's watching"
Have you given your son or daughter a plus account with nexopia.com? Did they tell you that Plus makes it safer for them cause they can see who's browsing or "creeping" their profile and it only costs $30.00 a year??? I hope you didn't fall for that excuse.
The main concern with plus is that now your child's picture (random picked by nexopia) and profile will be highlighted on the main page periodically. They keep a history of the last profiles as well, kinda like window shopping for pedophiles. Kids are proud to have plus, the feather in cap to make their peers jealous. There's nothing to enhance security.
The features of plus are as follows, let's discuss what you've just given your child.:
Spotlight - A random Plus user is spotlighted every minute on the front page.
This is the big one and it's a game... Woohoo, i've been spotlighted is what you'll find posted in comments or blogs. Many other random users that see the profiles make comments as well. The problem being, your childs profile and pictures have just been stuck on the main page for all the world to browse. Getting that shivver down your back now?
Recent Visitors List - See who has visited your profile.
This is the one you're told about, your childs main selling point. Unfortunately, Plus membership also allows a user to browse anonymously. Kind of a moot point now isn't it?
But...
Visit Anonymously View other people's profiles without them knowing you were there.
Sort of negates what your child has told you eh? Now a pedophile or "creeper" can register on nex, get a plus account and surf anonymously... go figure.
Profile Skins - Give your profile that extra bit of flair by customizing the colours.
Not a huge deal, they can spruce up their profile.
Fewer Ads - Choose to disable most advertising on the site.
Most advertising, but not all... They have to make money somehow.
Friends List Notifications - Receive a message whenever someone removes you as a friend.
Self explanitory.
See Common Friends - When visiting someone's profile, your friends in common are bolded.
Extra Friends - Four times the amount of friends you can add.
Great, add more friends.
Longer Profile Sections - Double the amount of stuff you can put in your profile.
Yep, they can add alot more information to their profile, it's not like their adding enough now.
Extra Profile Pics - Upload 12 pictures to your profile (instead of Cool.
Yep, many kids now have the ability to show it off alot more...
Priority Picture Approval - Your pictures get moderated before everybody else.
This is the one I find funny, picture moderation. How many kids are posting pics of them drinking, smoking, toking and other illegal activities. Yet they still get approved...
Enhanced Photo Gallery - 50 times more pictures, larger picture resolution.
That's just wonderful isn't it? many kids are taking advantage of it seeing they have their own webcam, digital cam or camera phone...
File Uploads and Hosting Upload up to 10MB of files for storage.
Great, don't need to host my pics elsewhere, can now throw them up on nexopia.
Btw, most kids are using sites like photobucket to store their pictures, be aware of that...
Advanced User Search - More options when searching for users.
Great, how much easier can we make it for someone to track your kids on a website...?
Custom Forum Rank - Customize the text that appears below your username in the Forums.
Create a User Forum Create your own User Forum and control who gets to be a part of it.
Message Status See whether a message you sent has been read.
Multiple Message Send the same message to several mutual friends at once.
Hide Profile Hits Hide the number of hits to your profile.
So what have we learned about Plus??? It's not an option that's going to make your child more secure, it just gives them a feather in their cap. If you know your child is on nex, you really should take a look at what they are doing cause i'm sure it's going to surprise you.
Thank you.
